Yesterday, Ranieri was absent from Trigoria to avoid any contact with Gasperini.

But what marked the distance between Ranieri and Gasperini was the statement labeling the coach as Roma’s fourth choice: “We appointed 5-6 coaches in the summer, three of them didn’t come, and in the end the club decided.” Gian Piero hadn’t expected such a frontal attack at such a delicate point in the season.

Ranieri himself didn’t imagine at the time that the coach would question the signings and, to some extent, the direction the ownership had taken, so he decided to respond clearly. Even if the tone, or the nature of his intervention, wasn’t in agreement with the Friedkins.

The ownership, in any case, didn’t use a heavy hand, which means that while they were taken aback by the outburst, they at least shared some nuances.

Thus the president, who considers the coach’s work excellent and the director’s support equally indispensable, attempted to mediate to put the pieces back together. Too late, however.

The Friedkins’ absence from Trigoria has weighed on the internal climate. No one can now say they’ll be sure to continue.

After the departures of Mourinho and De Rossi, Friedkin would gladly avoid further damage to his reputation. The rift is therefore the result of a laceration that has festered for months without anyone addressing it.
