Marcus Rashford has revealed that Aston Villa’s “constant ambition” enticed him to leave Manchester United for the Midlands.
The Englishman fell out of favour under United boss Ruben Amorim, leading to him receiving just 118 minutes of the available 1350 under the former Sporting Lisbon manager.
Rashford sealed his six-month loan move from United to Villa on Sunday which includes a £40 million option to buy.
Speaking to Aston Villa, he said: “It’s the constant ambition that is attractive. It’s why you want to join such a club. You want to keep improving year on year and that’s what the team has been doing and are doing this year.
“It’s an ambitious time for this club and a great opportunity for me to join the team and help them keep pushing forward. I’m excited – I can’t wait for the first training session and the first game.
“I know I can hurt teams and when I’m playing at my best I can decide football games. That will be my only ambition, to help the team win more games, win more points and hopefully make history.
“It’s my first time playing for any other team so you don’t really know what to expect. But it’s been more excitement than being scared of a new environment.”
The move to Villa Park sees Rashford return to Champions League football after Unai Emery’s men booked their place in the last 16.
Rashford added: “It will be a new experience for me, playing for Villa in the Champions League. It’s always going to be a great moment, but the aims remain the same, to try and do our best to win it.
“I’ve played a fair amount of games in the Champions League, so I feel like I’m experienced and know how to handle those types of situations.
“It’s a new environment, new team, new team-mates, so it’s about shared experiences and using each other’s experiences to help you get through the game and hopefully keep winning.
“We want to go as far as we can in that. If you don’t aim to win it, you’re never going to win it.”
The England international was continually left out Amorim’s squads at United after the Portuguese manager questioned the striker’s work rate in training.
Amorim has been outspoken when asked about Rashford’s absence – including eyebrow raising remarks after his side’s 1-0 win away to Fulham last month.
He said: “It’s always the same reason – the training, the way I see a footballer should do in life. It’s every day, every detail.
“If things don’t change, I will not change. It’s the same situation for every player, if you do the maximum and right things we can use every player.
“You can see on the bench we miss a bit of pace on the bench, but I would put [Manchester United goalkeeper coach Jorge] Vital before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”
Despite the lack of game time, Rashford heads to Villa Park as United’s joint-fourth highest goalscorer this season.
With a point to prove, the United academy star will relish the opportunity to line up alongside the other attacking talent in claret and blue.
Rashford explained: “I’ve had to choose somewhere where I feel my style of football is suited to, and can help them and help me rediscover and improve as a player.
“Obviously it’s only short-term I’m here, so I want to make the most of my time here, and the only way to do that is by using my attributes and my skillset to help the team.”
