Rayo Vallecano have moved to appoint Beñat San José as head coach after Iñigo Pérez’s departure for Villarreal. According to Superdeporte, the Eibar manager is close to taking over in Vallecas as the club reshapes after a historic season.
Jagoba Arrasate had appeared set for the job, but plans have shifted and Rayo have turned to San José. A fee is needed to release him from his current club.
A payment of about €400,000 would be required to secure his release from Eibar. San José has persuaded the board and sporting department with his style, prompting the change of direction.
San José would be making his Primera División debut. The 46-year-old from San Sebastián has spent most of his career outside Spain.
Since leaving Real Sociedad’s B team in 2012, he has coached Al Ittihad, Al Ettifaq, Antofagasta, Bolívar, Universidad Católica, Al Nasr, KAS Eupen, Mazatlán and Atlas, then joined Eibar in February 2025.
He has overseen 60 matches with Eibar across a season and a half, recording 27 wins, 17 draws and 16 defeats. His tenure has been positive, with Eibar narrowly missing the promotion play-offs this season and going close in the previous campaign after climbing away from the bottom places.
