  • RB Leipzig: Gulacsi; Klostermann, Orban, Lukeba, Geertruida; Haidara, Vermeeren; Nusa, Xavi Simons; Openda, Sesko
  • Liverpool: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jones, Luis Díaz; Nunez

Team news:

Both Lois Openda and Amadou Haidara are expected to feature after seemingly overcoming knocks suffered in the Mainz win. Meanwhile, former Red Peter Gulacsi — the best goalkeeper in Europe on current form according to the Squawka Score — should start in goal.

However, Assan Ouedraogo (back), David Raum (ankle), Xaver Schlager (knee) and Nicolas Seiwald (muscular) are injured.

For Liverpool, Conor Bradley and Federico Chiesa were previously rated as doubts and neither has travelled. Alisson (hamstring), Harvey Elliott (foot) and Diogo Jota (suspected rib injury) are also absent.

A yellow card against his former club would also see Ibrahima Konate suspended for Bayer Leverkusen’s visit next month. Konate scored for Liverpool in their Champions League opener against AC Milan, as did another Leipzig alumni, Dominik Szoboszlai.

Arne Slot has said that Trent Alexander-Arnold is a doubt, with Joe Gomez on standby to start at right-back.

Liverpool in the midst of brutal fixture run

Liverpool boss Slot has a perfect record in winning five away games from as many matches in charge, including a 3-1 Champions League victory at AC Milan.

That result was backed up by a 2-0 victory at home to Bologna and his team’s trip to RB Leipzig comes in the middle of a massive week for his side.

Sunday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea took them back to the top of the Premier League table after Manchester City overhauled them for a short spell earlier in the day after winning at Wolves.

With Southampton the visitors to the Etihad, the Citizens should return to number one on Saturday, but Liverpool could restore their one-point advantage and land a blow on another title rival, by winning Sunday’s late game at Arsenal.

Managing a club as big as Liverpool is not just about domestic success, though. With key absentees such as Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota, Slot will need to show his ability to utilise his squad by ensuring he selects the right team to get a result in Leipzig on Wednesday.

Going down to Atletico Madrid (2-1) and Juventus (3-2) have left Die Bullen with work to do in the Champions League.

However, those setbacks are their sole defeats this season and they sit second in the Bundesliga, tied with leaders Bayern Munich on 17 points but with an inferior goal difference.

Despite previously being known for their free-flowing, entertaining football – perhaps reverting to type in Europe – Marco Rose’s side have only conceded twice in the Bundesliga, with both goals coming in their 3-2 win at reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.

They come into the game on the back of a routine 2-0 win at Mainz and cannot be underestimated.

Liverpool are the favourites to make it six out of six on the road under Slot, but with his side looking light in a couple of areas, the result could hinge on how the Dutchman uses his squad.
