Real Madrid have confirmed Kylian Mbappe has sustained a sprain in his left knee, with conservative treatment ongoing and progress to be monitored. The forward has felt knee pain for the past three months, missing six games in that period.
The statement was issued on Monday evening before their La Liga meeting with Getafe. Marca states that Mbappe travelled to France for a second medical opinion and reported rising tension over the handling of his issue, with the player seeking care from staff he trusts.
Madrid had been opaque about his status. Last week, manager Alvaro Arbeloa said he would be fit for the Champions League tie with Benfica, only for his omission to be confirmed less than 24 hours later when he was left out of the squad. Arbeloa cited knee discomfort and declined to set a return date.
For now, a non-surgical approach is expected to continue, with surgery considered undesirable. The plan remains conservative, subject to how he progresses.
Looking ahead, the France captain has the World Cup this summer in his sights and wants to be in peak shape. As it stands, he is a major doubt to face Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16.
