Real Madrid plan on bolstering their centre-back department again next summer, following the signing of Dean Huijsen earlier this year.

With David Alaba set to depart as a free agent and Antonio Rudiger’s future also uncertain, Los Blancos intend to bring in at least one top-level centre-half before the start of the next season.

One of the names being heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu is Dayot Upamecano, whose contract at Bayern Munich expires at the end of the season.

Upamecano opens up on Bayern Munich contract situation

Upamecano has been at Bayern Munich since 2021, having joined from RB Leipzig, and has developed into a key player at the Allianz Arena.

As such, the 26-year-old defender admitted that he felt comfortable at the club and that his agent was in talks with the Bavarians, hinting that a renewal might be on the cards.

“I feel comfortable here, I’m happy. My agent is speaking to Bayern officials,” Upamecano told BILD, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“The talks are ongoing. There’s nothing more to say. We’ll see what happens,” the French international added.

This comes after Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund revealed that the German champions are intent on keeping hold of Upamecano.

“Upa is an outstanding player with a great personality. He knows what he has at FC Bayern,” Freund said.

“Of course we hope he will stay with us in the long-term. There’s no deadline,” he added.

With both the player and the club’s wishes seemingly aligning, there is a good chance that Upamecano ends up signing a new contract with Bayern Munich, meaning a move to Real Madrid is highly unlikely.

The Merengues, though, have alternative options lined up, including Upamecano’s compatriot, Ibrahima Konate of Liverpool.
