With Florentino Perez once again in control and Jose Mourinho now a free agent, Real Madrid are expected to accelerate their efforts in the transfer market.

The club have already roped in Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries – though not officially – but they are looking for further reinforcements in defence.

One of the players Real Madrid have been linked with is Josko Gvardiol, the talented centre-back who can also operate as a fullback.

According to The Athletic, Gvardiol is looking for a new contract at Manchester City. He has been a part of the setup for three years now, with his current deal expiring in 2028.

Gvardiol has done well at Man City, racking up 122 competitive appearances and emerging as one of the most versatile and gifted defenders in the Premier League.

Now, it appears the Croatian international wants to be rewarded with a new contract, amid fresh speculation about his future.

This contradicts recent reports, which had indicated that Gvardiol is open to the Real Madrid option thanks to Jose Mourinho’s appeal.

A great option nonetheless

Real Madrid, though, will be well advised to keep tracking Gvardiol’s situation as the former RB Leipzig defender could solve two problems at the Bernabeu.

For one, he could offer stiff competition to the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao next season.

Moreover, he can operate as a left-back as well, which could be useful for a team that has not been impressed by the performances of Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras, while Ferland Mendy has struggled with injuries.

Not to mention, Gvardiol, at 24, has many years ahead of him, thus making him a smart long-term investment as well.
