Real Madrid plan on strengthening their defensive unit once again next summer, despite investing heavily on three new signings in the department this year.

The focus will be on beefing up the centre-back position, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba – both of whom are out of contract at the end of the season.

Players like Ibrahima Konate, Dayot Upamecano, and Marc Guehi have already been touted as possible targets for the Spanish capital giants. But a new name has now emerged as an option.

Real Madrid eyeing Nico Schlotterbeck

Indeed, according to SportBILD, Real Madrid are one of the clubs showing an interest in the situation of Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

One of the most highly-rated defenders in Bundesliga, Schlotterbeck’s current contract expires in 2027, meaning he will only have a year left on his deal next summer.

Dortmund are eager to extend the German international’s contract and offering him a three-year deal until 2030. However, the 25-year-old defender is in no hurry to renew.

“Of course, the appreciation is great on both sides. But to be honest, I don’t think I’ll extend my contract anytime soon,” Schlotterbeck recently said.

This has seemingly alerted clubs like Real Madrid, as well as Bayern Munich, both of whom have now emerged as possible destinations for Schlotterbeck.

The 25-year-old star is understood to be seeking a salary in excess of €10 million per year at Dortmund. At the same time, he is also aware that top clubs could come calling, given his current contract situation.

As such, he is in no rush to proceed with talks over an extension with the Black and Yellows. A left-footed centre-back, capable of playing as a full-back as well, Schlotterbeck can be an excellent addition to any top club, including Real Madrid.

At 25, his best years are ahead of him, while his ball-playing abilities would make him a good fit into Xabi Alonso’s setup. Whether Los Blancos make a move for him or opt for potential free agents like Konate or Guehi, however, remains to be seen.
