Benfica president Rui Costa has this weekend spoken out on the future of star defender and Real Madrid target Álvaro Carreras.
The name of Spaniard Carreras has of course taken its place centre stage in the media headlines in his home country over recent weeks.
This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that new Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso had identified the 22-year-old as the perfect addition to his squad for next season.
An agreement with Benfica, in turn, was not expected to be long in being found.
To date, though, no such accord has been forthcoming, culminating in mounting concern amongst those of a Real Madrid persuasion.
And as alluded to above, on Saturday, such supporters have been afforded an update on the situation.
Speaking during an appearance in front of the media this weekend, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Benfica president Rui Costa explained:
“We haven’t reached an agreement with Real Madrid. Carreras is playing in the Club World Cup with us and is a Benfica player. We’ll see what happens with the entire transfer market, not just Álvaro. He’s focused on playing in the Club World Cup with Benfica.”
