La Liga giants Real Madrid have moved away from a long-held contract policy, to tie Thibaut Courtois down to fresh terms with the club.

That’s according to Blancos insider Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, who has this weekend provided an insight into the situation.

Goalkeeper Courtois has seen his name take its place centre stage in the media chatter surrounding Real Madrid over the last 24 hours.

This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that the Belgian has agreed to extend his time in Spain’s capital.

Ahead of the expiration of his previous contract in the summer of 2026, Courtois has been locked down for a further 12 months.

And as alluded to above, in the process, those behind the scenes at the Santiago Bernabéu have made something of an ‘exception’.

As per a report from the reliable Mario Cortegana:

‘Courtois’ extension marks a significant departure from Madrid’s policy of giving players over 30 year-to-year deals. His increased salary is applied from this summer, which means the goalkeeper is now on a two-year contract.’
