Kylian Mbappe faces an important challenge heading into next season at Real Madrid, as the French forward needs to rebuild trust within the dressing room after a campaign that failed to meet expectations.

Despite finishing as La Liga’s top scorer in his second season at the Santiago Bernabeu, Mbappe was unable to help Real Madrid secure major silverware. 

While his individual numbers remained impressive, a recent report from AS suggests that concerns have emerged regarding his role within the squad and some decisions made throughout the season.

As a result, the focus has moved from his performances on the pitch to his standing among teammates.

What’s the story?

According to the outlet, some members of the Real Madrid dressing room have become frustrated with decisions made by Mbappe during the season.

The report claims that certain actions were perceived as prioritising individual interests over collective objectives, something that affected how the French international was viewed on a day-to-day basis within the squad.

As such, Real Madrid’s hierarchy are said to have addressed the situation directly before the team’s match against Athletic Club.

According to the report, club directors reminded Mbappe of his importance to both the present and future of Real Madrid. 

At the same time, they encouraged him to reflect on the events of the season and understand the expectations that come with being one of the faces of the project.

Furthermore, there were moments during the campaign when Mbappe appeared to be moving towards a leadership role within the squad, although that transition never fully materialised.

Neither the player nor the dressing room embraced that responsibility in the way many had anticipated.

While the report highlights concerns inside the club, it also makes clear that Real Madrid continue to place enormous faith in Mbappe.

In fact, the Frenchman remains one of the most talented players in world football and is viewed as a central figure in the club’s long-term plans, and his goalscoring record demonstrates the same.

The bigger issue appears to be integration and influence within a dressing room that has traditionally valued collective commitment above individual status.

Real Madrid have built many of their greatest teams around strong unity, with leaders setting standards both on and off the pitch. 

This is why the expectation now is for Mbappe to move further in that direction and adopt a more collective approach in his daily work and decision-making.
