While international friendlies are often treated as low-stakes encounters, the upcoming clash between France and Colombia carries significant weight for Eduardo Camavinga. 

For the Real Madrid midfielder, this match could decide his chances of making it to the France’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

As reported by AS, Camavinga is yet to fully cement his place within the national setup. 

Despite being regarded as one of the most talented midfielders of his generation, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Didier Deschamps.

Important for club and country

Part of the challenge lies in his versatility. 

Over the past season, Camavinga has been deployed in various positions, including left-back and even further forward, both at club level with Real Madrid and with the national team.

Interestingly, this adaptability could still work in his favour, as Deschamps has long valued players who can perform across different roles. 

This is one of the key reasons why Camavinga continues to be included in the squad, even during periods where his club form has been inconsistent.

The season itself has not been smooth for the 23-year-old, as injuries have disrupted his rhythm, limiting his ability to build momentum heading into the international tournament. 

In addition, he has struggled to secure a consistent starting spot, be it under managers Xabi Alonso or Alvaro Arbeloa.

Despite these challenges, though, Deschamps has shown faith in the midfielder by calling him up for recent international fixtures. 

However, opportunities have been limited, as Camavinga did not feature at all in the match against Brazil.

Needs a strong performance

At present, he is considered around the fifth choice in France’s midfield rotation. 

Although he has already accumulated 40 caps for his country, only 14 of those have come as a starter, which is a worrying sign.

This is why the upcoming match against Colombia is so important. 

Deschamps is expected to rotate his players for his match, and a strong performance could shift perceptions, giving the coach a strong reason to trust him in a more prominent role.
