Bernardo Silva has officially begun life as a Real Madrid player, having reported to Valdebebas to start pre-season training today, after his post-World Cup vacation.

Signed as a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired, Bernardo was one of Jose Mourinho’s personal requests to Florentino Perez.

Now that he is here, one question remains unanswered: Where will the Portuguese play?

After all, versatility is one of Bernardo’s most effective weapons, as he is capable of operating as a deep-lying midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or on the right wing.

As such, AS reports that Real adrid’s coaching staff has yet to settle on his primary position for the veteran. For now, Bernardo is Mourinho’s tactical joker, a ‘wild card’.

A player who can do it all

Few players in world football offer the flexibility Bernardo brings. He can dictate play from midfield, create chances as a No. 10, or provide width from the right flank. Each role presents opportunities, but also selection dilemmas.

Playing centrally would compete with Federico Valverde, while an attacking midfield role overlaps with Jude Bellingham, and moving wide could affect the place of imminent new signing Yan Diomande.

As things stand, Bernardo feels both impossible to leave out and difficult to pencil into a starting XI.

The tactical puzzle

Last season, Bernardo spent 64% of his matches as an attacking midfielder, 22% in central midfield, 14% on the right wing.

Those numbers illustrate Mourinho’s dilemma. Every position suits Bernardo’s qualities, but every position also means leaving out another important player.

It’s the kind of selection headache every manager wants. More importantly, it makes Real Madrid far less predictable.

Experience that Real Madrid wanted

Silva’s signing represents something of a departure from Real Madrid’s traditional recruitment policy. He will turn 32 next week, yet the club still offered him a two-year contract.

His technical quality and versatility made him attractive, but Mourinho was equally convinced by something less tangible: experience.

The Portuguese coach believes Bernardo is the type of player who remains calm in the biggest moments, someone capable of controlling matches when pressure is at its highest.

Training underway

After enjoying one of the longest post-World Cup breaks in the squad, alongside Vinícius Jr., Bernardo reported for duty today. His first day consisted of a demanding double training session at Valdebebas.

The morning focused on physical work after completing his medical, while the afternoon shifted toward technical exercises as Mourinho’s squad entered the fourth week of preseason.

With just 19 days remaining until the La Liga opener, the Portuguese midfielder has little time to settle in.

And, as things stand, Mourinho and his staff do not have a fixed role for him and intend to capitalise on his tactical versatility.

Whenever Bernardo prepares to come off the bench or enters the starting lineup, opponents may struggle to anticipate exactly where he will play. That uncertainty is precisely why Mourinho wanted him.
