Real Madrid are not ready to give up on Martin Zubimendi just yet. As reported by AS, the club is planning one last attempt to bring in the Real Sociedad midfielder, who is seen as the ideal fit for Xabi Alonso’s new midfield setup.
While Arsenal have shown strong interest and are reportedly leading the race, Madrid believe no other player on the market matches Zubimendi’s profile.
In the last few months, pessimism grew in Madrid about the possibility of landing the 26-year-old. Arsenal’s firm interest and the €60 million release clause made the deal seem difficult.
However, Alonso has made it clear that Zubimendi is his top choice for the midfield and after careful analysis, Madrid have concluded that none of the alternatives come close to offering what Zubimendi can bring.
Zubimendi himself is reportedly open to joining Real Madrid. So much so, he has paused talks with Arsenal while waiting to see how Madrid proceed.
He has not signed any deal yet, which keeps the door open for Los Blancos to make their move. There is also a sense of optimism within Madrid due to their good relationship with Real Sociedad, which could help smoothen negotiations.

Instead of activating the full €60 million clause, Madrid are considering offering players in exchange. These could include top prospects from Real Madrid Castilla, or even squad members from the first team, which Sociedad could find appealing.
However, if Sociedad decline the swap, Madrid will have to make a hard decision, either through a free loan deal or just walk away.
One major hurdle remains the salary. Arsenal are reportedly offering Zubimendi a contract worth €10 million per year, far higher than what Real Madrid usually pay new signings.
Madrid are willing to offer around €6–7 million in the first season, staying within their strict wage structure.
The race is still open, and much will depend on whether Real Sociedad accept a creative deal or force Madrid to pay the full amount.
One thing is clear that Alonso wants Zubimendi, and Madrid are making every effort to deliver.
