Liverpool declined to make any purchases for their midfield sector during last summer’s record-breaking transfer window.

It means Arne Slot is still largely working with the same midfield contingent he had at his disposal while winning the 2024/25 Premier League title.

A lot will once again be asked from Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo. Other less senior options - including Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton and James McConnell - have moved either on loan or permanent deals.

And the prospect of Richard Hughes acquiring a top midfielder in transfer windows upcoming should not be discounted. One name reported to be on the list of late has been Eduardo Camavinga.

The France international is finding Real Madrid starts increasingly hard to come by under Xabi Alonso - even in his auxiliary position at left-back. It has led to speculation that the 22-year-old could move on before his contract expires in 2029.

And now a report in E-Noticies suggests that Real Madrid are prepared to sweeten their attempts to sign Gravenberch from Liverpool by including Camavinga in the deal.

“Real Madrid would have studied a possible exchange with Liverpool offering Eduardo Camavinga,” the report reads.

“Real Madrid, according to this proposal, would offer the youngster as part of an exchange that would benefit both parties.

“Liverpool would strengthen their core with a player with a huge career, while the Whites would incorporate Ryan Gravenberch.”

Real Madrid want Gravenberch

Gravenberch, 23, has emerged as one of the world’s top No6s in the last year or so - earning a place on the PFA Players’ team of the year for his work during the Premier League title win.

Madrid would dearly love to sign Gravenberch - who is under contract until 2028 - but would struggle to afford Liverpool’s asking price.

But if Camavinga was included as part of the deal then there may be a pathway to a deal. Nonetheless Liverpool will be stubbornly standing against losing Gravenberch - who is in line for a new contract on Merseyside.

Camavinga needs a fresh start

Signed by Jurgen Klopp back in 2023, Gravenberch was originally a No8 before being moved deeper by Arne Slot during his first season in charge.

That was an inspired move for the Dutchman, who has been excellent ever since. Whether he signs a new deal on the terms offered remains to be seen - and there could well be the possibility of Liverpool having to fight off transfer interest in their key man.

Camavinga - for his part - represents a high-quality replacement. He has fallen behind Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde in Alonso’s pecking order and looks like a player in need of a fresh start.
