Real Madrid reach agreement in principle with midfielder over new contract | OneFootball

In a major update, Jose Felix Diaz of MARCA reports that Real Madrid and Luka Modric have reached an agreement in principle over his contract renewal for one more year.

Modric, 38, has a contract that expires at the end of the ongoing season, and for quite some time it was believed that the Croatian international would bring an end to his time at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

However, things have taken a U-turn in the past few days, with Real Madrid deciding to hand the veteran superstar a new contract.

Earlier today, Modric’s agent hinted that a renewal was very much on the cards and now it appears that it is a done deal.

As per MARCA, Real Madrid tabled a renewal offer for Modric, as well as his midfield partner, Toni Kroos, with club president Florentino Perez taking matters into his own hands.

And, it is further claimed that the Croatian international has said yes to the proposal, with an agreement in principle now in place between the two parties.

It is now expected that Kroos will also follow suit, meaning Los Blancos will tie down their veteran superstars for one more season.

Modric, for his part, was reported to be willing to accept a pay cut as well as a reduced role in the team in order to stay as a Real Madrid player, which may have played a part in the hastened agreement.

The ongoing season saw Modric lose his prominence in the team in the early parts of the campaign. However, he has proven in recent months that he can still be a valuable contributor to the team.

Furthermore, his presence in the dressing room is a huge bonus as youngsters can feed off his knowledge and experience. So, Modric continuing at Real Madrid for another year is certainly a good news.
