Real Madrid’s defensive inconsistencies came to the fore in the recent Clasico against Barcelona, as the Men in White conceded not one but four goals.

Fullbacks, in particular, were unable to handle the attacking onslaught of Barcelona wingers such as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

The dismal performance against Barcelona was enough to highlight that Real Madrid are in dire need of defensive reinforcements.

Real Madrid closing in on Alphonso Davies

Although Real Madrid have practically ruled out signing any new players in January, the club remain committed to bringing in new faces in the summer.

To that end, a recent report from SportBILD (h/t SPORT) suggests Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Alphonso Davies, one of their top defensive targets.

As per the report, Davies is getting closer to leaving Bayern Munich with each passing day and is merely a step away from finalising his decision.

Real Madrid have been in contact with Davies’ agents in the past, but it appears Los Blancos have intensified their approach in recent weeks.

Bayern’s effort to renew Davies, meanwhile, have practically gone for a toss and it is very unlikely the defender will continue in Bavaria.

Real Madrid were not the only club interested in Davies. Manchester United, for one, were willing to meet the Canadian’s salary demands, but the player himself was not convinced of their plans.

Barcelona were another club interested in Davies. Although the Catalans are not out of the chase yet, Real Madrid remain the red hot favourite, for now.

With strengthening contacts, the Spanish giants are confident they can wrap the deal up sooner rather than later.
