The Negreira scandal and Barcelona’s involvement unsurprisingly took the world of football by storm when it first came to light, and allegations of the club making payouts for favourable refereeing decisions seemed believable.

The case, however, has developed significantly from the time of its initial report, and Joan Laporta and Co. have even seemingly come out clean in recent hearings.

The club president, after all, made it very clear that the payouts were made to the company owned by Jose Maria Negreira, the former vice-president of the Referees Technical Committee, for reports on referees and players – a known practice in the world of football.

Real Madrid turning into a protagonist

The most recent development in the case came to light two weeks ago when Joan Laporta, Ernesto Valverde and Luis Enrique were asked to testify in court about the nature of the payouts.

Notably, the court agreed to reopen the case citing ‘special circumstances’ despite Laporta and Co. being cleared.

Now, MARCA bring to light that Real Madrid have entered the fray and that their legal team have requested the court to extend investigations into the scandal by another six months.

Their demand is that the investigation be extended from September this year, when it was set to conclude, to March 2026, so as to gain further clarity on the reality.

Florentino Perez, after all, stated in a recent assembly that he will do anything to get to the root of the problem.

Real Madrid decided to enter the legal proceedings involving the Negreira case as they believed the matter could indeed have had sporting implications.

However, so far, there has been no concrete evidence found against any sort of wrongdoing by the Blaugrana. Despite that, now there has been a request made for an extension of the investigation.

At this point, the allegations against Barcelona seem to be growing out of proportion, with it clear that the club had only made payments for regular scouting reports.
