According to MARCA, Real Madrid have laid out their short-term plan for the start of the La Liga season, and it could not be clearer: nine points out of nine before the September international break.

For Xabi Alonso and his players, this is not just about collecting points, as it is about building momentum, confidence, and setting the tone for a demanding campaign that will include both domestic and European challenges.

The coaching staff is well aware that after the short and disrupted pre-season, the team is still in the process of sharpening their style. Their involvement in the Club World Cup meant Real Madrid had the shortest pre-season in their history.

Real Madrid have set a target

That lack of preparation time has been visible on the pitch, where at times the team still look like they are finding their rhythm. Even so, the win against Osasuna on the opening weekend has already set the foundations.

Now, with fixtures against Oviedo and Mallorca before the break, Madrid know exactly what must be done.

Six more points will allow Alonso to take his side into the international window with maximum confidence and without unnecessary pressure.

The importance of these matches is not underestimated, especially given the high expectations that surround this team following summer changes and the arrival of new players.

Growing identity under Alonso

Beyond the points, what Madrid want to see is further evidence of the footballing identity Alonso is building.

His blueprint was already visible during the Club World Cup: structured possession, high pressing, and rapid transitions.

Alonso himself is under no illusions. He has stressed that two weeks of preparation is nowhere near enough to fully shape the side he envisions.

But what he demands in the meantime is tactical discipline and adaptability, two qualities he believes will allow Madrid to grind out results even before they hit peak form.
