Vinicius Jr.’s contract situation is starting to become a sore subject for Real Madrid, with there being no tangible progress made on the matter.

Earlier this year, things seemed to be moving forward, but everything has come to a standstill in recent months, with the forward’s strained relationship with Xabi Alonso only serving to complicate matters further.

Vinicius set to enter final year of his contract

Now, according to Rodra of ESPN, negotiations between Vinicius and Real Madrid over a contract renewal remain stalled, and there is a strong possibility that talks will not resume until after the 2026 World Cup.

This situation would leave the Brazil international entering his final contract year with his future unresolved, as his current deal with the club expires in June 2027.

The report adds that this scenario could still change, but in reality negotiations have been at a standstill for some time and the situation remains in a deadlock.

Two different versions

In May this year, Real Madrid and Vinicius’ camp were close to reaching an agreement over his extension.

Vinicius, according to one source speaking to ESPN, was set to receive €20 million per year and €10 million in bonuses.

However, the source also claimed that the final offer from the club differed from what had been discussed because it did not include the €10 million in bonuses.

The club’s version denies any change in the terms of the offer. It does indicate some frustration within the Real Madrid hierarchy with Vinicius’s entourage, as they believed the renewal was assured before the summer.

Weeks later, they were met with the Brazilian’s refusal, feeling that he had gone back on his word. Talks have not progressed at all since the season began.

Real Madrid remain optimistic and believe an agreement will eventually be reached. Even so, another source states that the board, led by Florentino Perez, is unhappy with the way Vinicius’ camp is handling the negotiations.

Alonso in the equation

As mentioned earlier, the relationship between Vinicius and Xabi Alonso is not helping either.

The Real Madrid coach has changed the player’s status within the squad, leaving him on the bench three times this season and removing the untouchable role he had under Carlo Ancelotti.

This has not been well received by the Brazilian, who considers the decision unfair. The frustration is such that it has been suggested that with the Basque coach in charge, the player’s renewal appears increasingly unlikely.

Vinicius currently earns around €17 million net per year, and with the new offer said to be around €20 million per year, his representatives believe there is currently no justification for accepting a small salary increase in exchange for a renewal until 2030.
