Real Madrid are being linked with Sunderland defender Trai Hume this summer, with Defensa Central claiming he is among the right-sided options under review.
Real are said to be scanning the market amid the expected exit of long-serving Dani Carvajal, prioritising a rotation option over a major outlay. Hume is mentioned alongside Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson as potential low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. A fee of around €22 million, roughly £19 million, is floated.
The move feels unlikely at this stage, yet it underlines Hume’s growing reputation after another strong season for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a consistent presence under Régis Le Bris, valued for his versatility, intensity and reliability.
Hume came through Ballymena United and Linfield, making his senior Linfield debut in April 2019. A loan back to hometown Ballymena brought 37 appearances and six goals. He then returned to Linfield and established himself as first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed Hume from Linfield in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He debuted in a 2-1 defeat to Cheltenham Town a month later and became a regular during the 2022-23 campaign.
He earned a contract extension in 2023, then agreed a long-term deal after Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, committing him until summer 2030. Earlier this season he scored his first Premier League goal in a 4-3 defeat to Aston Villa.
