Scotland captain Caroline Weir has put pen to paper for French side OL Lyonnes, following the expiration of her contract with Real Madrid.
Weir, 30, leaves Real as the side’s all-time top scorer, tallying 63 goals in 125 appearances for the club. Primarily an attacking midfielder, Weir is the consummate 10. Her ability to see the field and find attacking lanes for herself and her forwards makes her a dangerous threat every time she is on the field.
Caroline Weir is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in all of football. This was evidenced last year, as she was named on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or. Her transfer to Lyon will bolster a strong midfield, and will certainly help in the club’s pursuit of a ninth Champions League title.
The Scottish sensation has played for several legendary clubs in her professional career. Following her start with Scottish side Hibernian, Weir came to the WSL with Arsenal in 2013. After cutting her teeth in North London, she had stints with Bristol City and Liverpool. Then, she moved on to where WSL fans know her best, the sky blue of Manchester City.
Weir was a dominant force with the Cityzens, finding the back of the nest 38 times over her spell there. Her legendary strikes in several derbies made her a public enemy in the red side of Manchester.
Weir’s contract with Lyon is for three years. She is excited to play for a side that has won five straight league titles, and is a perennial contender for the Champion’s League title. Describing her thoughts on the move, Weir stated: “To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club.”
Caroline Weir and OL Lyonnes will start their pursuit of a sixth straight league title in September.
