Real Madrid have opened talks with Liverpool over the early release of Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to BBC.
Los Blancos want to add the right-back to their squad ahead of next month’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
The 26-year-old confirmed on Monday that he will leave Liverpool when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
He has already agreed to join Madrid on a free transfer, but the Spanish giants are looking to expedite the move.
They want it done sooner rather than later so he can feature in the Club World Cup, with Madrid kicking off the tournament against Al Hilal in Miami on June 18.
Madrid first approached Liverpool in January in an effort to bring Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu ahead of schedule.
That attempt was rebuffed, but Madrid have reignited that interest with renewed urgency as the expanded Club World Cup inches closer.
No formal bid has been submitted yet, but Madrid are reportedly considering a nominal offer in the region of £850,000 to accelerate the transfer.
For now, negotiations are still at an early stage, but it gives Liverpool a chance to get something for their academy graduate.
Alexander-Arnold is part of a group of Liverpool stars – including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk – whose contracts were set to expire this summer.
The latter duo have extended their contracts by two years, but the England international has chosen to embark on a new adventure in Spain.
FIFA has introduced a special transfer window from June 1 to June 10 for clubs involved in the tournament to register new players, with a secondary window running from June 27 to July 3.
If Liverpool refuse to release him early, Alexander-Arnold will still be eligible to play in the latter stages of the competition, provided the deal is finalised before July 3.
For now, the ball remains in Liverpool’s court, but Real Madrid have made their intentions clear – they want Alexander-Arnold in white and ready for Miami.
