Palma has been a reliable reset for Real Sociedad before the Copa semi-final return. After the jolt against Oviedo, when two points slipped away, Son Moix offers familiar comfort. Since 2019, six visits have brought three wins and two draws, with one defeat.

According to Diario Vasco, the run began in 2019-20, when Martin Odegaard’s first Real goal arrived in the 83rd minute from a rapid break launched after a Mallorca corner. It settled a tight contest.

In March 2022 they won 0-2, David Silva scoring before the break and Mikel Merino adding from a corner on the hour.

In 2022-23 it finished level. Carlos Fernández scored early from a Silva pass, Kang-Inn Lee equalised via an Abdón Prats flick, and Robin Le Normand had a header ruled out for climbing on Ruiz de Galarreta, VAR not intervening. Merino was dismissed late.

Early February 2024 brought a goalless Copa semi-first leg, Real on top but profligate as Umar Sadiq missed chances, with Mikel Oyarzabal sidelined. Later that month Merino’s stoppage-time header earned a 1-2 league win after Antonio Sánchez’s opener and Take Kubo’s equaliser. His L celebration was misread and later mocked when Mallorca reached the final at Anoeta.

Last season delivered the first Palma defeat in 12 years, decided by Abdón Prats’ penalty after a Barrenetxea handball to a Samu Costa shot, and Real created little in response. With Athletic due on Wednesday, tomorrow’s trip to Son Moix sets the tone, and Matarazzo and his players know it.
