Having beaten Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, the Rouge et Blanc are now guaranteed a podium finish, cementing their status as the best team in this area in Ligue 1. Here's a look at the statistics on this subject, thanks to the help of Opta.
Ultimately, it wasn’t necessary to wait until the last day to secure the podium as a 2-0 win over Lyon and by taking advantage of missteps by all of its direct competitors, AS Monaco is now assured of finishing among the top three in Ligue 1. It’s been a habit since the creation of the Club and one which we invite you to discover in a few stats, thanks to the help of our partner Opta. 📊
Let’s go back in time to Sunday, June 3, 1956. On that day, the Rouge et Blanc won 4-2 against Bordeaux and confirmed the first podium finish in their history, finishing in third place. It’s the start of a long run as since Saturday at around 11:05 p.m., this number now stands at… 31! It’s quite simple, no one has done better in Ligue 1, with the Monegasques being ahead of Olympique de Marseille (29) and Paris Saint-Germain (25).
While the capital club has a (very) slightly better ratio (48%), AS Monaco is just behind with 47% of podium finishes obtained in 66 seasons. This consistency at the highest level for almost seven decades (8 league titles, 8 second places, 14 third places) has been felt even more in recent years with nine podium finishes obtained in the last 12 years. This includes, of course, the highlight: the 2016-2017 season with the team’s eighth top-flight title !
Besides that, the Rouge et Blanc have finished in second place three times (2014, 2018, 2024) and four times third (2015, 2016, 2021, 2022), a number which will likely change depending on the final Ligue 1 standings on Saturday evening. Nine podium finishes therefore mean nine places in the Champions League or in the preliminary rounds. This is an area where only Paris has done better since the Club’s promotion in 2013.
On the other hand, throughout the history of the league, it is AS Monaco that has once again dominated, with a 20th appearance in the Champions League starting in September (5 in the European Cup, 7 in the preliminary rounds, and 8 in the group stages)!
And also a 28th qualification for Europe via the league, as the statistics generator points out. These impressive figures once again demonstrate the Principality’s club’s stature in Ligue 1. DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
