Reece James has always been the quiet type, but he’s now in the limelight as a regular captain for Chelsea. It looks like he will have the armband tomorrow against Bayern Munich.

He spoke to the media ahead of the game with one thing on the agenda – can Chelsea win this competition?

“I have no doubts in the club and the team’s ability to compete against the best teams in Europe and the world. We will take it game by game, week by week, and see where that takes us by the end of the season,” James said in a measured fashion.

He was then asked how he was going to feel leading his boyhood team out for such a big game:

“Of course, it’s going to be a great night for me, something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little boy. To walk out as captain at such a historic stadium would be an amazing feeling.”

“We want to compete at the highest level and compete for all the domestic trophies and the Champions League as well. I believe we have a super strong team and those will be our targets this season.”

Captain calls changes difficult

Another question put to James was on the turnover of players at the club in recent years. He is the final player left at the club who was there for the Champions League triumph of 2021. James admitted it was hard to manage up, but also argued that Chelsea were through the worst of it:

“It’s difficult. The club’s had a lot of change. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a bad thing, if you look at last season, we qualified for this competition and won two trophies. So with all the change, we started slow but last season I think we came on leaps and bounds.”
