Reeling Arsenal and Newcastle Square Off

Five games to go and the Premier League season is ready for a final reset. For Arsenal, the title race is still in their hands. But they must equal and better Manchester City from now until the last match. That said, recent results have left them vulnerable after conceding a nine-point lead at the top. For Newcastle United, this is about restoring some control after a difficult run.

Wobbly Form for Arsenal…

Arsenal come into this match off the back of two straight league defeats, both by 2-1 scorelines against Bournemouth and Manchester City. It is the first time since April 2022 that they are at risk of losing three consecutive Premier League games. There has also been a pattern in those defeats, with Arsenal going behind early and chasing matches rather than dictating them.

Even so, the bigger picture remains positive. As Mikel Arteta said on the eve of this match: “Five games to go. Four weeks, two big competitions to play for and everything to play for. If somebody had told us at the beginning of the season we would have taken it. We are so excited.”

That reference to two competitions matters. Arsenal also have a Champions League semi final first leg in Madrid next week, which adds another layer to team selection and squad management. But in the league, the focus is straightforward. They need to regain control quickly. They need to win!

One bonus for Arteta is the return to fitness of Bukayo Saka. With him starting, Arsenal win 73 percent of their league games and average 2.36 points per match.

Without him, those numbers drop significantly. In a tight title race, that difference is hard to ignore.

…Even Worse for Newcastle

Newcastle’s situation is very different. Since 25 January, they have lost eight of their last eleven league games, more than any other side in that period. It is a run that has pulled them away from the European places and raised questions about the direction of the squad.

Manager Eddie Howe acknowledged that, suggesting change could be coming.

“There might be bigger changes in the summer than was maybe previously thought,” he said. In the short term, his focus is on standards. “It’s about attitude, commitment to the team. I think the players would expect that. I think they understand the demands and the role they’re in.”

Injuries have not helped. Anthony Gordon is unavailable after missing training this week, while Tino Livramento is still being assessed after his latest setback. Howe admitted it has been a frustrating season for players who have struggled to build any rhythm.

Despite the results, Newcastle still carry attacking threat. Only four teams have recorded more shots on target this season, which suggests their underlying approach has not disappeared. The issue has been consistency rather than creativity.

End Result: A Square Tie

That leaves this match balanced in a simple way. Arsenal need to respond and keep pace at the top. Newcastle need to show a level of organisation and discipline that has been missing in recent weeks.

With five games left, there is less room for recovery. For Arsenal, that means turning pressure into points. For Newcastle, it means proving their season has not drifted too far off course.
