In his match report, referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima said he was insulted by Corinthians assistant Lucas Silvestre during Thursday’s game against Athletico at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, the second round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Silvestre was shown a straight red for dissent at 55 minutes of the second half, then confronted fourth official Anderson Ribeiro Gonçalves with offensive and threatening remarks. The fourth official felt offended.

The match was tense between players and officials. In the first half the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Matheus Bidu on Viveros, and after prolonged protests he gathered both captains and head coaches before the restart to ask for an end to complaints.

Corinthians also disputed several decisions during play, as well as the 12 minutes of stoppage time at the end.

It was not the first flashpoint between Pereira de Lima and the current Corinthians staff. In October last year at Beira-Rio against Internacional, he dismissed head coach Dorival Júnior and recorded insults from president Osmar Stabile and then football executive Fabinho Soldado.

On that occasion Dorival waited for the referee to leave the pitch to escalate his complaints after the red card, and had to be restrained by security. Corinthians also protested a Hugo Farias goal disallowed for offside and a last-play penalty given against Cacá on an Internacional player.

Dorival, Fabinho Soldado and Osmar Stabile faced an STJD hearing over their remarks about the officiating, and were acquitted. The case rapporteur said the report signed by Pereira de Lima contained inconsistencies and failed to individualise the behaviour of those accused.
