Regis Le Bris highlighted higher standards after Sunderland’s pre-season defeat to Leeds United, calling the New Jersey meeting a good test.

The sides met in the early hours of Friday UK time on their USA tour, with Leeds contesting only their second friendly of the summer. Lukas Nmecha struck the only goal as Leeds collected a first win after last weekend’s 3-2 loss to Wrexham in Tampa.

It was Sunderland’s third outing, following a 5-1 win at York City and a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool in Nashville.

"Yeah, it was a good test," said Le Bris. "I think we felt today that the standards are getting higher because of the opposition, but also because we feel that the energy of the squad is getting better as well." The Sunderland Echo carried the interview.

"So we still have a few details to solve, to fix, and it's probably better to make mistakes now to understand what could be the consequence rather than being exposed later."

"So overall, I appreciated the energy. Our principles, I think, are getting better as well so we are in a good place."
