According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris has highlighted Trai Hume’s importance to Sunderland’s Premier League campaign, citing the defender’s consistency and versatility as central to their top-flight return.
He said Hume can play left-back or right-back, operate on the right wing or in midfield, and could slot into a back three at centre-back, though he has not used him there in a four.
Hume covered on the right flank earlier this season while Bertrand Traoré was at AFCON then injured. With Chris Rigg in strong form, that switch looks unlikely for now, but Le Bris still views it as a useful option, particularly away to stronger sides.
Hume has played 2,584 Premier League minutes this season, the most in the Sunderland squad, ahead of Robin Roefs and centre back Omar Alderete. Enzo Le Fée and Noah Sadiki complete the top five. Roefs recently sustained a hamstring injury.
Hume will return to Wearside later this week after Northern Ireland face Wales on Tuesday night. He captained his side in a 2-0 defeat in Italy last week, which ended their World Cup hopes.
He felt they were in the game for long spells, but said 10-15 minute periods in each half brought chances and unwanted chaos, and Italy scored at a good time. He added the young team must learn, believes they are improving, and noted key players were missing on Thursday and throughout the campaign, but they have to keep improving.
