Nilson Angulo is nearing fitness, with Sunderland hopeful he could travel to Aston Villa and eyeing Nottingham Forest for a fuller return. Inclusion at Villa Park is viewed as unlikely.
Sunderland Echo reports that the 22-year-old is in the final stages of recovery and close to rejoining full training.
Angulo trained at the Academy of Light last week after a muscle problem suffered before the 1-0 loss to Brighton on March 14. Régis Le Bris initially set a four to six week timeline.
He has since missed several fixtures. Le Bris is set to be asked for an update at his pre-Villa press conference.
International plans were also affected. Named in Ecuador’s provisional squad to face Morocco and the Netherlands, Angulo withdrew to continue rehab on Wearside, which head coach Sebastián Beccacece confirmed.
He joined from Anderlecht in January for around £17.5million after seven goals and eight assists in 30 appearances.
The winger has five Premier League outings, three starts, without a goal or assist. Across 264 minutes he has posted 0.50 expected goals and 0.08 expected assists.
Le Bris’ side sit 10th, two points behind sixth-placed Chelsea, with six games left, starting at Villa then Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea. Angulo’s early minutes are likely to be managed as he builds back.
