Paulo Henrique faced mounting scrutiny from Vasco supporters as a 3-2 comeback win over Fluminense on Wednesday 18 saw many in the stands lose patience with his first-half display. After the match, Renato Gaúcho publicly challenged the right-back to rediscover his level.

According to PaponaColina, his form has slumped sharply in early 2026 after a standout 2025 that included a call-up by Carlo Ancelotti to the Brazil national team and a goal.

Tensions had already risen following defeat to Santos, when members of an organised group confronted him over a friendly exchange with Neymar.

Online reaction focused on frailties in defence and a steep drop in attacking thrust, with some profiles calling his performance unbearable and likening him to a beginner. One angry supporter demanded the exits of Paulo Henrique, Lucas Piton and Hugo Moura.

Gaúcho said he had a frank talk on arrival, asking where the player who made the Brazil squad had gone, insisting he had not unlearned the game and reminding him last year was excellent while offering confidence.

He also warned the squad about heavy competition at full-back, citing PH and Puma on the right and Cuiabano and Piton on the left. He said places are open, the group is small and anyone not delivering could find themselves on the bench.
