From an Arsenal supporter’s perspective, this report makes a lot of sense. Saliba missing an extended period is the kind of development that can change a season if the club are not proactive. Even if there is trust in the existing squad, losing such an important defender alters the balance of the back line, especially in matches where Arsenal want to dominate territory and defend high up the pitch.

Debast feels like the sort of move Arsenal could genuinely consider. He is young, already well regarded, and the €40m price point sounds far more realistic than some of the inflated figures being quoted for Premier League-proven targets. If Arsenal have tracked him before, that reduces the risk because they will already know whether his style suits the demands of Mikel Arteta’s system.

Supporters will probably be split. Some will want an immediate move for a proven, ready-made centre-back, while others will see the logic in targeting a younger player with room to grow. Personally, the key point is Arsenal’s refusal to panic. The line about not spending “crazy money this summer” is encouraging. Smart recruitment has been a huge part of Arsenal’s rise, and abandoning that principle because of one injury would be short-sighted.
