Report: Aston Villa Optimistic About Re-Signing Striker This Month

Aston Villa’s January planning appears to be accelerating, with renewed optimism surrounding a potential move for Tammy Abraham. According to GiveMeSport, and specifically senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, the club believe fresh talks on the player side have nudged a long running pursuit closer to a conclusion. For Villa supporters, the name alone stirs memories of a prolific Championship season and a forward who once felt central to the club’s momentum.
The report states that Villa are “optimistic about concluding a deal for Abraham this month”, even with complications still in place. Abraham, currently on loan at Besiktas from Roma, remains tied up in a three club negotiation that reflects the increasingly tangled nature of modern transfers.
While Roma are said to be open to selling Abraham for “less than £15m this month”, the real difficulty lies elsewhere. Besiktas have a conditional obligation to buy the striker, which GiveMeSport describes as the “main hurdle” in negotiations. That clause has turned what might have been a straightforward deal into one that requires careful diplomacy.
Villa’s willingness to offer the 28 year old a long term contract suggests belief not just in his pedigree, but also in his readiness to re enter the Premier League at the right level. Abraham’s reported £115,000 a week salary further underlines the scale of commitment required.
Abraham’s previous spell at Villa Park during the 2018/19 season remains an important reference point. Scoring 25 goals in 37 Championship appearances, he was central to a campaign that re established Villa’s top flight credentials. That version of Abraham felt decisive, confident, and crucially, durable.

Since then, his Premier League output has been more modest. In his final league season at Chelsea in 2020/21, he scored six goals in 22 appearances. This season at Besiktas, however, his numbers show renewed sharpness, with 13 goals and three assists in 25 matches.
GiveMeSport note that Abraham would likely serve as back up to Ollie Watkins, a role that has lacked definition since Jhon Duran’s departure to Al Nassr. With Donyell Malen now sold to Roma, Villa are also monitoring wide forward options, though Abraham’s deal appears to be the immediate priority.
Unai Emery’s January work has already brought in Alysson and Brian Madjo, with Malen the only confirmed outgoing so far. The sense is of targeted refinement rather than overhaul.
From a Villa supporter’s perspective, this report feels quietly encouraging rather than headline grabbing. Abraham returning does not scream transformation, but it speaks to something arguably more important, depth with purpose. Watkins has carried a heavy load, and the absence of a credible alternative has often forced tactical compromises late in games.
There is also an emotional pull here. Abraham’s Championship season remains one of the most joyous individual campaigns Villa Park has witnessed in recent years. Fans remember the swagger, the connection with the crowd, and the feeling that goals were inevitable. Whether that version of Abraham can fully return is the lingering question.
Still, his current numbers at Besiktas suggest confidence and rhythm, qualities that often matter more than league context.
If the fee stays below £15m, and if Besiktas can be navigated diplomatically, this feels like a calculated gamble rather than a reckless one. For a club balancing European ambition with domestic consistency, that balance matters.
