Liverpool are positioning themselves at the front of an increasingly competitive queue for one of Europe’s most talked about young defenders. According to Sports Boom, who deserve credit for breaking this development, the Reds and Manchester City ‘lead the race’ for Lens centre back Samson Baidoo, with a fee in the region of €45-55m required to secure his services.
Baidoo, a 21 year old Austria international with one senior cap, has taken a sharp upward trajectory over the past four years. Having developed within the Red Bull network at Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, he made 71 appearances for Salzburg, scoring twice, before moving to RC Lens in July 2025 for €8m.
Lens have a track record of intelligent recruitment and profitable sales. Should Baidoo depart for a fee between €45m and €55m, it would eclipse the €40m received from RB Leipzig for Lois Openda in 2023, setting a new club record.
Since arriving in France, Baidoo has featured 20 times in Ligue 1, adapting swiftly to the demands of a physical and tactically nuanced division. Sports Boom describe him as ‘ready for top-tier competition’, most likely in England.

Liverpool’s interest is framed around long term planning. Baidoo has been identified as the ‘ideal successor’ for Virgil van Dijk, a statement that carries weight given the Dutchman’s enduring influence at Anfield.
He is characterised as a ‘physical force’ and a ‘tactical mastermind’, while scouts have labelled him ‘athletic, durable and explosive’. Those close to the situation highlight his ‘lightning-fast’ reaction time, which makes him a reliable last line of defence. In Ligue 1, he is already regarded as ‘one of the toughest centre-backs’.
Such attributes align with the profile Liverpool have often targeted in central defence, pace across the ground, authority in duels, and comfort in structured systems.
Manchester City’s approach differs slightly. The report claims they would sign Baidoo before loaning him back to Lens for another season, a familiar development pathway within the City Football Group model.
Beyond England, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan have been scouting consistently, while previous reporting has linked West Ham United and Crystal Palace to the player.
The presence of multiple elite suitors reinforces the sense that this is a genuine market opportunity rather than speculative noise.
For Liverpool, the timing is notable. Arne Slot delivered the Premier League title in his debut season, yet the title defence has unravelled, with the Reds currently fifth and facing renewed scrutiny over squad evolution.
Central defence will inevitably form part of that review. Baidoo represents a blend of upside and resale potential, though at €55m, this is no developmental gamble. It is a statement move.
Credit must go to Sports Boom for outlining the contours of this emerging battle. As the summer window approaches, Liverpool appear well placed, but with Manchester City circling and European heavyweights attentive, this could become one of the defining defensive transfers of 2026.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, there is understandable caution.
Yes, Samson Baidoo is described as ‘athletic, durable and explosive’, and being labelled ‘ready for top-tier competition’ sounds encouraging. However, supporters have heard similar projections before. The step from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is significant, particularly for a centre back expected to succeed Virgil van Dijk.
Arne Slot’s first season brought a title, an extraordinary achievement. Yet this campaign has exposed structural weaknesses, with Liverpool sitting fifth. Spending up to €55m on a 21 year old with 20 Ligue 1 appearances feels bold, perhaps too bold for a side needing immediate reliability.
There is also the question of leadership. Van Dijk offers presence, organisation and calm in high pressure moments. Baidoo may possess physical tools, but does he command a back line at Anfield on a European night?
Many fans would prefer a proven, elite level centre back, someone who walks into the starting XI from day one. Baidoo could become that player, yet the margin for error next season is slim. Liverpool cannot afford another transitional year while rivals surge ahead.
