This summer has not been one of quiet recalibration for Liverpool. The backroom shifts at Anfield have come thick and fast, the club’s hierarchy moving with intent and clarity. And now, Liverpool FC Women appear ready to follow suit, preparing for a major appointment that could redefine their trajectory.
According to The Guardian, Liverpool are in discussions with Gareth Taylor, the former Manchester City head coach, in what would be a significant addition to the club’s women’s football project. For a team seeking to restore its place among the WSL elite, Taylor’s arrival would represent more than just a change in personnel—it would be a declaration of ambition.
Taylor, 52, was dismissed by City in March after nearly five years at the helm. His tenure included tangible silverware: a Women’s FA Cup in 2020 and a League Cup triumph in 2022. It was, by most metrics, a spell defined by consistency and cup success, even as City occasionally faltered in the league.

His potential appointment would follow the exit of Matt Beard, who departed after a turbulent campaign and has since taken over at third-tier Burnley. Should Taylor take the reins, he would inherit a Liverpool side that finished seventh last term under interim boss Amber Whiteley. The gap between that mid-table reality and the club’s once-glorious past—WSL titles in 2013 and 2014—remains wide.
But Taylor’s record in managing big occasions and nurturing talent at the top level could offer the framework Liverpool need to mount a meaningful resurgence.
The prospect of Gareth Taylor at the helm signals more than a managerial reshuffle—it’s about reasserting Liverpool’s place in the women’s game. In recent seasons, the club’s ambitions have too often been outpaced by rivals like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
Liverpool’s challenge is not just to compete again—but to matter again. And if Taylor arrives, armed with experience and expectation, they may just be setting that process in motion.
