Coventry City are exploring a move for former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
According to Football Insider, Frank Lampard’s side are interested in signing the Dutch international, whose contract with Al-Ettifaq expires at the end of the season. Wijnaldum is expected to leave the Saudi Arabian club after making 100 appearances for the Dammam based side.
Coventry’s promotion has brought renewed optimism, but recruitment now becomes central to their hopes of staying in the division. Lampard will want players who understand Premier League demands, and Wijnaldum clearly fits that profile.
Wijnaldum remains highly regarded at Liverpool after five successful years at Anfield. He joined from Newcastle United in 2016 and became one of the most reliable players in a side that won the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Across 237 appearances for Liverpool, Wijnaldum scored 22 goals and earned a reputation for tactical intelligence, discipline and consistency. His energy in midfield, ability to retain possession and knack for performing in major matches made him a key figure under Jurgen Klopp.
Although Arne Slot is now Liverpool’s manager, having won the Premier League in his first season in 2024/25, Wijnaldum’s contribution to the club’s modern success remains significant.

For Coventry City, this would be a move built around experience and dressing room influence. Newly promoted clubs often need more than enthusiasm, they need players who can manage difficult periods, control tempo and bring authority to tight matches.
Wijnaldum, now in the later stages of his career, has still shown strong output in Saudi Arabia. His return of 15 goals and six assists in 29 appearances this term suggests he remains physically capable and technically sharp.
Lampard’s squad will need Premier League know how, and Wijnaldum offers exactly that. He has played at elite level for Liverpool, Paris Saint Germain, Roma and the Netherlands, giving Coventry a level of pedigree rarely available on a free transfer.
Financially, the deal could appeal to Coventry City if wages are manageable. Wijnaldum would arrive without a transfer fee, allowing the club to invest elsewhere while adding a proven midfielder with leadership qualities.
There will naturally be questions over whether he can adapt back to the Premier League’s intensity. However, Coventry are not looking for a long term project in this area, they are looking for immediate quality and calm under pressure.
For Wijnaldum, a move back to England would offer one final Premier League chapter. For Coventry City, it would represent a statement signing as they attempt to turn promotion into survival.
