Squad omission signals potential exit

Liverpool’s preparations for the new season took a notable turn when Kostas Tsimikas was left out of the matchday squad for the Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley. The absence of the 29-year-old defender, who had been a regular feature throughout pre-season under Arne Slot, has intensified speculation over his future at Anfield.

Tsimikas has operated in both left-back and centre-back roles during the summer, offering versatility and experience. However, with the arrivals and existing depth in the position, Liverpool now appear willing to sanction a permanent move away after nearly five years on Merseyside.

Defensive depth shapes decision-making

The arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a deal worth £40 million, coupled with Andy Robertson’s continued presence, has left Liverpool well-stocked on the left side of their defence. The club’s willingness to part with Tsimikas reflects a broader squad restructuring that has gathered pace during the transfer window.

Nottingham Forest, backed by owner Evangelos Marinakis – who shares nationality with the player – are among those to have monitored the situation closely. Forest made their interest known earlier in the summer, while newly promoted Leeds United have also been linked. Interest from clubs abroad adds further intrigue to the unfolding scenario.

Permanent transfer the only option

Liverpool’s stance is clear: they will only consider a permanent sale and are not open to loan arrangements. The club has been deliberate in managing its resources, ensuring any departures align with long-term strategic plans. The left-back position had been earmarked for adjustment since Kerkez’s arrival in June, with Robertson himself attracting brief attention from Atletico Madrid earlier in the window before the Spanish side turned to alternative targets.

Summer overhaul continues at pace

This potential departure would be the latest move in a busy summer for Liverpool, both in terms of arrivals and exits. The club recently finalised the sale of Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal in a deal that could reach £56 million, contributing to a total of over £200 million in player sales during the window.

Tsimikas’ next step could hinge on Forest’s persistence or the readiness of another suitor to meet Liverpool’s terms. For a player with European experience and domestic honours, opportunities are unlikely to be in short supply. Yet Liverpool’s position remains firm: only a permanent deal will suffice, as they prepare for the challenges of the season ahead with a leaner, more focused squad.
