French giants Lyon have reportedly entered the race to sign Juventus outcast Lois Openda. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Les Gones are contemplating a summer swoop for the 26-year-old.
Openda was one of the most sought-after strikers last summer. Numerous top clubs were keen on securing his signature following his impressive two-year stint at RB Leipzig. Juventus won the race, signing the Belgian star on loan with an obligation to buy.
Little did they know Openda would flop big time in his first season in Serie A. Indeed, he scored just once in 24 league outings, casting major doubt on his long-term prospects in Turin. Nevertheless, Juventus must fork out €40 million to make his transfer permanent this summer.
However, they’re already looking to move him on. Like Jonathan David, Openda has fallen short of expectations and could leave the Allianz Stadium after just one year.
Even Luciano Spalletti couldn’t have steered Openda’s faltering career back on track. Despite being on the verge of losing Dusan Vlahovic on a free transfer, Juventus are open to selling Openda, as they prepare to revamp their attacking options.
As for the player, he could fancy a return to Ligue 1. Openda enjoyed a sterling breakout season at Lens in 2022/23, which earned him a move to Leipzig in 2023. Therefore, Lyon’s call could be too tempting to resist.
It’s no wonder Paulo Fonseca is in the market for a new striker. With Endrick set to return to Real Madrid after a superb loan spell, Lyon must fill the gap in the final third. It could be music to Juventus’ ears.
