Jonathan David has the name, the reputation and the underlying quality to make fans sit up. Anyone who watched him at Lille knows there is a proper striker there, someone clever with his movement, calm around the box and capable of linking play rather than simply waiting for service.

But Newcastle need certainty now. Missing out on Europe changes the mood around the club, and supporters will want signings who raise the floor immediately. David’s Juventus numbers are not disastrous, but they do not scream guaranteed Premier League success either.

That is why a loan makes sense. It protects Newcastle from a big mistake while giving Howe a player with serious upside. If David adapts, Newcastle could have a hungry forward entering his prime. If he struggles, the club can walk away without being tied to a long contract.
