Real Madrid Transfer Round-Up: Summer Moves Underway

Real Madrid’s summer rebuild is already gathering pace, with the Spanish giants proactively addressing key areas of the squad. The club’s recent transfer business reflects a strategy geared not just for the imminent Club World Cup, but for the longer term as well.

Defensive Additions Lead Early Activity

Madrid acted swiftly to secure Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for €10million, ensuring his availability for the Club World Cup. While the England international could have arrived on a free post-tournament, the urgency stemmed from Dani Carvajal’s long-term ACL injury and the likely departure of Lucas Vazquez, who is expected to leave after the competition.

Dean Huijsen has also joined Los Blancos in a club-record £50million move for a defender, arriving from Bournemouth. With Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Eder Militao all nursing injuries, the acquisition of the 20-year-old Spain international was considered vital. While Rudiger and Alaba might feature in the United States, doubts remain over Militao’s availability.

Focus Turns to Left-Back and Midfield

Madrid remain in advanced talks, according to The Athletic, with Benfica for Alvaro Carreras, a former academy product who would cost approximately €50million. Negotiations have been complicated by Manchester United’s buy-back option worth up to €20million, and a 20% sell-on clause tied to his 2024 transfer to Lisbon. Should a deal for Carreras fail, Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo is being considered as an alternative.

In midfield, Real are weighing their options following Toni Kroos’ surprise retirement and the impending exit of Luka Modric. Reinforcements in that area are under active review by the recruitment department.

Alonso Sets Tone for Transition

“We always want to improve and since recently I want to have that communication with the club,” Xabi Alonso stated at his unveiling. “The squad is very good and it’s not that I’m coming to you (the club) with demands but with the idea of wanting to improve.”

The arrivals of Alexander-Arnold and Huijsen align with Alonso’s preliminary vision. Further signings, particularly at left-back, would solidify the manager’s squad ahead of the Club World Cup.

Possible Departures and Loan Deals

Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, tied to Madrid until 2030, is exploring options for more regular first-team football. Despite interest last summer, no satisfactory offer materialised. For now, he has informed club officials of his intention to stay.

Fran Garcia’s future is under review, especially if a new left-back arrives. Interest from Bournemouth and uncertainty surrounding Ferland Mendy’s injury record could dictate Garcia’s fate.

Rodrygo’s situation is also worth monitoring. Despite not featuring in the final games of the season, the club issued no official medical update. Premier League clubs have shown interest, and Kylian Mbappe’s arrival last year has impacted Rodrygo’s role.

“He is a Madrid player and I will have a conversation with all of them,” Alonso said. “He is a spectacular player and we will need him.”

Jesus Vallejo has already departed after his contract expired, while Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric will leave post-tournament. Both received emotional send-offs at the Bernabeu, and remain intent on continuing at the top level.

Although Madrid typically avoid loaning young talent due to limited guarantees on game time, sources believe Castilla forwards Victor Munoz and Gonzalo Garcia could be exceptions this summer. Both have drawn interest domestically and abroad.
