Jude Bellingham found himself at the centre of controversy following England’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.

However, a fresh report has provided new context behind the incident that went viral across social media.

The Real Madrid midfielder was widely criticised after appearing to slap Valentin Barco on the back of the head during the post-match exchanges. 

However, according to AS, the altercation was preceded by two separate incidents involving the Argentina defender, both of which contributed to Bellingham’s emotional reaction after the final whistle.

The England international is understood to regret his actions, but the report suggests the confrontation did not occur in isolation.

Two moments that escalated tensions

According to the Spanish outlet, the first incident took place immediately after Enzo Fernandez scored Argentina’s equaliser.

Rather than celebrating with the rest of his teammates, Barco ran towards the England players and celebrated directly in front of them. 

The report claims the Argentine defender jumped and celebrated close to Bellingham while the rest of Argentina’s squad gathered elsewhere to mark the goal.

That moment is said to have created the first flashpoint between the two players during an already tense World Cup semi-final.

The second confrontation came after the match had ended.

As Bellingham approached Barco to shake hands, the Argentine is alleged to have directed a comment towards him in Spanish, believing the England midfielder would not understand what had been said.

Bellingham understood the remark, and that exchange prompted his reaction, which included the slap that later went viral online.
