Slot Confident in Existing Defensive Cover

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has played down suggestions that the club will be forced into the transfer market to reinforce their centre-back options ahead of the new season.

Concerns were raised after the squad travelled to Asia with only two senior centre-backs available for selection. The issue was compounded by the absence of Joe Gomez, who has returned to Merseyside for rehabilitation on a minor Achilles problem. Despite the reduced numbers, Slot insists Liverpool have sufficient depth to navigate the remainder of pre-season and beyond.

“I’m looking to my left at Virgil [van Dijk] and I’m not concerned,” Slot told reporters following his side’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong. “Ryan [Gravenberch] showed today he can operate in that role, as he did at times last season. It’s not his natural position, but he’s capable.”

Slot also pointed to the versatility of Wataru Endo, who has prior experience in central defence, though illness kept him out of the Milan fixture. Kostas Tsimikas partnered Ibrahima Konaté in the second half, further highlighting the adaptability within the squad.

Injury Adds to Centre-Back Debate

Gomez’s fitness has become a talking point among supporters, especially with the England international limited to just 11 minutes of action so far in 2025. The timing of his setback has heightened scrutiny over Liverpool’s decision not to replace Jarell Quansah, who departed earlier in the window.

Yet Slot remains composed. “Joe’s injury is minor. He was important for us last season and should be back soon. I understand the discussion around centre-backs, but we feel we have enough options within the squad,” he said.

The Dutchman reiterated that the club’s recruitment strategy has not wavered, even after a near £300m summer outlay. “We’ve brought in players where needed, but it’s also about improving those already here. That was our approach last season and it led to a title.”

Squad Evolution Still in Progress

While Slot is pleased with Liverpool’s transfer activity, he also acknowledged the importance of continual evolution. “Other clubs are strengthening, both domestically and in Europe. To stay ahead, we must grow as a group—technically and mentally.”

The manager referenced recent additions and hinted at further development, particularly as new signing Hugo Ekitike beds into the system. “The squad is already showing good signs. The energy in training, the performances in games—it’s promising.”

Despite the Milan result, Slot chose to focus on broader progress rather than the scoreline. “We were exposed on the counter too often, something we need to correct. But I also saw positive patterns and sharp moments from the team.”

Gomez Injury Highlights Long-Term Need for Flexibility

As Liverpool continue their preparations, the debate over whether the squad possesses enough specialist centre-backs will remain. However, Slot’s words suggest he values tactical flexibility over market activity.

Should Gomez return swiftly and others adapt as expected, the Reds may once again defy the narrative that reinforcements are essential. For now, Slot is standing firm.
