Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Everton on the final day did more than preserve Premier League status. It drew a hard line under a wretched campaign and gave Roberto De Zerbi the platform to begin the work he was brought in to do.
There was relief, certainly, but little room for romance. Spurs survived, Joao Palhinha scored the decisive goal, and immediately the focus shifted from escape to reconstruction. A club of Tottenham’s size cannot flirt with relegation and call it a blip. This has to be treated as a warning.
Palhinha’s future now becomes one of the first major decisions of the summer. The midfielder has been on loan from Bayern Munich for the 2025/26 season and is due to return to Germany. Yet De Zerbi has already made clear that he wants him permanently.
That matters. Palhinha gives Spurs bite, structure and authority in midfield, qualities they have too often lacked. If Tottenham are serious about building a side with backbone, keeping him feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity.
GiveMeSport reports that Tottenham should now complete a deal to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool, following confirmation of their Premier League safety.
Robertson, who said goodbye to Liverpool supporters after a 1-1 draw with Brentford, would bring leadership, edge and title-winning know-how. For a Spurs side needing personality as much as position-specific quality, that is significant.

He may not represent a long-term solution, but he would represent something Tottenham badly need, standards. Dressing rooms change when proven winners walk in.
Marcos Senesi could follow Robertson to north London, with the Bournemouth defender out of contract and reportedly close to agreeing terms.
According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Senesi has verbally agreed on the move, with a four-year contract under discussion.
He said: “Tottenham has verbally agreed on the signing of Marcos Senesi. There is a verbal agreement in progress between the parties, and the London club is already working on a four-year contract for the Argentine defender.
“Spurs are getting ahead of several European giants, even Liverpool showed interest in recent weeks.”
That line will sting at Anfield, particularly if Liverpool were genuinely considering Senesi. For Spurs, it suggests aggression and speed. For De Zerbi, it suggests control. He wants defenders comfortable with the ball, brave in positioning and strong enough to survive pressure.
Senesi may replace Cristian Romero if the Argentine captain departs. That would be a major shift, but Tottenham appear to be planning early, rather than reacting late. After a season of chaos, that in itself is progress.

For Tottenham supporters, this report should bring a strange mix of excitement and nerves. Survival against Everton was not glory, it was relief, but the early transfer movement suggests De Zerbi is not wasting a single day.
Palhinha feels like the key. Spurs have had too many pretty passages without enough steel, and he offers exactly that. If they can turn his loan into a permanent move, it would send a message that Tottenham want substance as well as style.
Robertson is fascinating. Some fans may question his age, but others will see a player who knows what elite standards look like. Spurs have often lacked that ruthless, vocal, demanding presence. He could help change the culture quickly.
Senesi, meanwhile, feels like smart business if the deal is as advanced as reported. Beating other clubs to a free agent defender with Premier League experience would be a sharp move.
The concern is obvious, though. Free transfers can be clever, but Tottenham need more than opportunism. They need a proper spine, better recruitment discipline and a clear plan around De Zerbi’s football. After last season, supporters will want proof, not promises.
