Jules Kounde was one of the two players injured during the match against Atletico Madrid, in which Barcelona fell short of their aim of reaching the Copa del Rey final.

The French right-back had to leave the pitch after ten minutes, and tests carried out this morning confirmed an injury to the middle third of the biceps femoris in his left thigh, as confirmed by the club.

Kounde out for 4-5 weeks

The statement issued by Barcelona on Kounde’s injury did not specify a recovery timeline, unlike with Alejandro Balde, who will be sidelined for four weeks.

However, now, according to Roger Torello of Mundo Deportivo, the French international is expected to be sidelined for between four and five weeks.

As a result, Kounde will miss a minimum of five matches and is not expected to return until after the upcoming international break.

This comes as a major blow for Barcelona, considering that the 27-year-old has been a permanent fixture in the team for Hansi Flick, playing in all but one match so far this season across all competitions.

The games Kounde will miss

With the hamstring injury confirmed, Kounde will first be unavailable this Saturday against Athletic Club at San Mames.

In addition, the former Sevilla defender will also miss both legs of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Newcastle United, with the first leg at St James’ Park next Tuesday (10 March) and the return leg at the Spotify Camp Nou on 18 March.

In addition, he will miss the La Liga fixtures at home against Sevilla (15 March) and Rayo Vallecano (22 March).

If the full five-week recovery period is confirmed, he will also be absent for the league match against Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on the weekend of 4 and 5 April.

In that case, he could return for the potential Champions League quarter-finals, should Barcelona eliminate Newcastle, with the first leg scheduled for 7 or 8 April.
