It has been a disappointing first few months of the season for Real Madrid. From a growing injury list to marquee new signings’ failure to disappointing results, things are not going well for Carlo Ancelotti & co.

While Barcelona’s missteps in La Liga have allowed Los Blancos to stay close to the top, things are looking much more grim in the UEFA Champions League.

After all, Real Madrid have already lost three of their five league phase games, leaving them in the 24th position in the table – with direct qualification to the knockout stages out of the question.

Financial blow

Apart from a blow in terms of confidence and morale, the three defeats in Europe have also made a mark in an economic sense for Real Madrid.

As mentioned earlier, Real Madrid have already suffered three defeats in this year’s Champions League: to Lille (1-0), AC Milan (1-3), and Liverpool (2-0).

The damage from these losses is not only sporting but also financial, as these results have cost the club €6.3 million in potential earnings, with UEFA awarding €2.1 million per victory.

Meaning, Los Blancos have missed out on €6.3 million in potential earnings thanks to their three league phase defeats in the UCL thus far.

With three games left to be played, Real Madrid’s chances of breaking into the Top 8, which provides direct access to the Round of 16, appear almost impossible.

However, Ancelotti’s men should still be able to manage to finish among the top 24 teams, despite having some difficult matches remaining, such as an away trip to Atalanta in Bergamo.
