Alejandro Garnacho’s turbulent spell at Manchester United looks set to end this summer, with Italian champions Napoli making a fresh approach for the 20-year-old winger. As reported by The Mirror, Napoli are reigniting their interest with a reduced £45 million bid, months after seeing a £60m offer turned down in January.
This renewed push comes amid Garnacho’s ongoing rift with United boss Ruben Amorim. The pair reportedly fell out following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, where Garnacho was benched. His response post-match was candid: “Obviously it’s hard for everyone. Our season was s**. We didn’t beat anyone in the league. We lacked a lot of things… I played every round. And I played 20 minutes today – I don’t know.”*
In a bold move, Amorim has exiled five players – Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – from pre-season training. All five have expressed desires to leave, and Amorim is making it clear he wants no disruptions during his first full pre-season at the helm.

United’s valuation of Garnacho remains at £60m, but their desperation to move him on – combined with the very public nature of the fallout – suggests they may have to accept less. Napoli are reportedly confident a deal can be struck closer to their £45m offer.
Napoli’s interest isn’t purely opportunistic. Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis is convinced of Garnacho’s potential, particularly away from the Old Trafford spotlight. “Garnacho’s got pace, flair and potential,” said De Laurentiis. “But that’s not even why we want him. We want him because he’s at United. Get him out and he becomes twice the player. There’s a fault at United that I can’t explain.”
De Laurentiis’ stinging criticism echoes growing frustration from abroad about United’s inability to nurture talent consistently. Napoli want to rebuild around experienced figures like Kevin De Bruyne – recently acquired on a free – and Serie A Player of the Season, Scott McTominay. Garnacho, still raw but highly talented, fits the bill.
United now face a difficult balancing act: stick to their valuation or cut losses for harmony and rebuild purposes. Amorim is clearly drawing a line in the sand, and Garnacho’s public discontent may make his continued presence untenable.
Napoli appear to be the only club still pushing for the Argentine, and with Garnacho’s summer uncertain, this offer might be the lifeline both parties need.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this saga is another example of the club’s dysfunction over the past decade. Garnacho is far from a finished product, but fans have seen flashes of brilliance – direct running, technical flair, and big-game courage. Losing him now would sting.
The issue isn’t just about Garnacho. It’s about player management, communication, and culture. Amorim may be stamping his authority early, but sidelining five players – including homegrown stars – feels more like a clean break than a rebuild. While many fans agree discipline is needed, some would question whether Garnacho’s punishment fits the offence.
Still, £45m for a player in open rebellion, especially when United are trying to fund a major rebuild, is tempting. The money could help fund a move for someone like Bryan Mbeumo, who Amorim is reportedly keen on.
United fans will keep an eye on how Garnacho develops – and whether this becomes another chapter in the long list of “what ifs” for a club struggling to restore its identity.
