Elliott’s price tag signals Liverpool’s intent

Elliott is currently valued at £40million if Liverpool include a buy-back clause in the deal, or £50million without one. These terms reflect how highly the Reds rate the 22-year-old and their desire to maintain a degree of control over his long-term future.

Despite his clear ability and contribution to England’s Under-21 European Championship win this summer, Elliott has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Anfield. Elliott’s stock has risen sharply after his dazzling performances during the Under-21 Euros, where he netted five goals in six games to help England lift the trophy. His versatility, being able to operate both out wide and centrally, is another reason he is admired by clubs across Europe.

Elliott in particular would bring flair and dynamism to a squad that has sometimes lacked creativity in central areas and wide positions. His ability to link midfield and attack while also contributing goals is exactly what fans have been crying out for since the likes of Jesse Lingard’s brief loan spell.

Morton might not be as headline-grabbing, but he looks like the kind of composed and press-resistant midfielder Potter could develop. He has Championship experience and youth international pedigree, which shows he is ready for the next step.

There is some scepticism about whether West Ham would pay £50million for Elliott without a buy-back clause, especially given the club’s history of being cautious with big investments on young players.
