Manchester City proved to be a more appealing proposition than La Liga giants Real Madrid during the recent January transfer window for Marc Guehi.
The England international’s mid-season move became a significant subplot in City’s campaign, with Guehi quickly thrust into high-profile fixtures and decisive moments, and proving to be an integral cog in Guardiola’s system.
The defender has featured prominently despite arriving midway through the season and some perhaps feeling as though a transitional period may be required, including a hostile outing at Anfield where he was strangely booed by Liverpool supporters.
Manchester City’s recruitment of Marc Guehi formed part of a broader defensive recalibration overseen by Pep Guardiola and Hugo Viana, amid concerns over the impact of long-term injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias earlier in the new calendar year.
And despite seemingly cruising to an agreement at the midway stage of the campaign, amid a belief that other Premier League sides could form a battle for the Englishman, it seems as though City still had to fend off competition from one of Europe’s premier clubs.
According to the information of The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana, Marc Guehi was offered to Real Madrid prior to his eventual transfer to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, but those in the Spanish capital decided not to act.
While Real Madrid continue to monitor defensive markets, City’s ability to provide a defined role, competitive pathway, and Pep Guardiola’s direct involvement appear to have tipped the balance in their favour.
Looking ahead, Guehi’s importance is only likely to grow as City navigate a congested schedule across domestic and European competitions, with rotation inevitable and defensive reliability at a premium.
Should Guehi continue to perform under pressure – as he did at Anfield – City’s January coup may come to be viewed as one of the defining moves of their season, while Real Madrid are left to reflect on a missed opportunity that has strengthened a direct European rival.
