Born in São José dos Campos, Goulart first featured for Santo André and Goiás, then rose to national prominence with Cruzeiro. He won the Brasileirão in 2013 and 2014, forming a key partnership with Éverton Ribeiro.

After that success he joined Guangzhou Evergrande in China. In 2019 he was loaned to Palmeiras, but the spell was muted by injury, before a return to Chinese football.

In 2022 he signed for Santos, staying six months. Following a contract termination he agreed a move to Bahia, remaining until 2023, when he announced retirement aged 31.

He received a Brazil call-up in 2014 under coach Dunga for friendlies against Colombia and Ecuador.
